CAPTAIN BAILEY

This remarkable museum is housed in the seven-gabled Captain Bailey House. Included on the National Register of Historic Places, it's built of brick manufactured in one of the three brick factories in early Brownville. It originally stood near the Missouri River; when the river began to change its course and endanger the house, it was disassembled in 1877, and moved brick-by-brick to its present location on Main Street. 

Captain Bailey was a Civil War Captain who lived in the house for many years. A local resident relates a story that purports that doors in the house will not stay closed because it is haunted by the ghost of Captain and Mrs. Bailey, who both were, it is said, poisoned by a jealous neighbor. Visit the museum, located 404 Main St., which is filled with artifacts from Brownville's glory days, today. See for yourself if you think the Baileys still live there.
